Lawsuit Filed Against Bonds In Kannapolis
From the Independent Tribune....
"The North Carolina Institute for Constitutional Law, a legal foundation in Raleigh, filed a lawsuit saying voters were not informed their rights to vote on local bond issues would be taken away."
This is very good news. I am glad to see an organized resistance to corporate welfare.
[Later in the article]
"North Carolina voters passed Amendment One in 2004 - the amendment to the state constitution that allows municipalities to use self-financing bonds for projects in conjunction with private development.
Orr and his group represent four registered voters from North Carolina who say their federal voting rights under the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and their due process rights under the U.S. Constitution's Fourteenth Amendment were violated. They are asking that the N.C. constitutional amendment be nullified.
Orr said the language on the ballot did not inform voters they would give up their voting rights.
"It's really a truth-in-advertising issue," Orr said. "Proponents of the amendment said it was about jobs and economic development. But the purpose of the amendment is asking people to give up their right to vote."
